Punjabi Style Cabbage (Band Gobi) from "Vegan Indian Cooking" book. Gluten Free Chickpea Flour Crepes (Besan Poora). Vegan "ChickFilet" Recipe from PETA. Jane Velez Mitchell, Walmart, Cruelty. Steven Colbert on Dogfighting, CongressMan Steve King, and D-bags.

I must have made at least a dozen recipes from this book, "Vegan Indian Cooking" by Anupy Singla, since it first arrived on my doorstep.  Love this one because cabbage is so healthy and also incredibly cheap, even organic.

Finished Punjabi Cabbage.  So delicious!

Ingredients for Chickpea Flour Crepes.
Besan Poora
Think they should be thin crepes, in/on which you can scoop up your dals, chutneys, or whatever other delight you may have in front of you.  I made them thicker because of my attempts at making without much oil and also I really stink at making anything resembling pancakes.

Love that  Bob's has Certified Gluten Free products-not everything, but a decent line.

I made these in a cast iron pan, just because it resists burning that way.  First attempted with zero oil, but then I had to add a touch, just to get the pan oiled a bit.  If you have some spectacular, green, safe non stick type of cookware-then you could probably do it sin oil.

Seitan (Or Gluten Free Tempeh) Mulligatawny Soup

Other News:

Jane Velez Mitchell, fellow vegan, is unafraid to tackle the big stuff.  No one would touch these types of stories years ago, but with social media and increased awareness, it is now becoming actually "okay" to discus this.  Of course "they" want to make laws that make it illegal to photograph factory farms, and of course do any type of undercover work.  So no photos of the farms please folks, but apparently in the states anyone with any type of mental record or hate group involvement can buy any type of gun/assault weapon.  What I love is that you can't grow sustainable hemp, say anything about the agricultural industry that would affect their profit, or not wear seatbelts in your car.  But green light on the guns.  We are very pragmatic people.

If wanna be Vegans, Wanna be Cholesterol Free Sandwich eaters, Fast Food Addicts, or people who are boycotting the "Eat More Cock" place want a "Chicken Sandwich"-this link is for you. Vegans always boycott Chick-fil-a because of the suffering they cause animals.  So we didn't alter any routines in either direction for the hoopla about "traditional" marriage.  From what I can tell, "traditional" means marriage between a man and a woman.  The man spends hours a day surfing online porn, tweets his privates, gets hookers across the state lines, has multiple mistresses, and hanging out at lesbian bondage clubs on the RNC's dime.  Traditional Marriage of Politicians.  So obviously, all other marriage is flat out wrong.

And another Jane Velez Mitchell spot.  Yes.  The ChickenDisaster again.  What is so ridiculous about all of this is that we have a lot of issues going on in our country (U.S.) and that most Americans don't ever protest anything.  But that the largest "protest" that I have seen in awhile, across that nation, that is actually publicized (Democracy Now not included)-is to eat fast food for a day.  It's like drunks "protesting" a vote by drinking a bottle of JB.  But fried chicken suddenly makes everyone an activist.  I think Weight Watchers should have just had free signups right there-to work the line.  Or maybe Dr. Oz could have done his surprise "checks" and get some vitals on the protestors.  Slightly apathetic if "protesting" in the States is to eat at a fast food joint.

And Steven Colbert on Steve King, who appears to be a major D-bag and not really have an issue on dogfighting.  Because as humans, we don't have the ability to want to reduce the suffering of people and OTHER animals.

Save New York's Whole Earth Bakery! Juices, Smoothies, Vegan Eats, Raw Foods, Gluten Free Options in the East Village. Pig & Dog.

Whole Earth Bakery
130 Saint Marks Pl # 2  New York, NY 10009

Whole Earth Facebook
So we were wandering about the Village one evening, and finally I was able to "find" and check out the "Whole Earth Bakery". We had tried to make it there once before, but they were closed for remodelling.  An all vegan bakery on St. Marks, in the heart of the  East Village, open 7 days a week.  Peter Silvestri is the owner & has been serving up vegan goods since 1978.  Think they have been at their current location since about '91 and apparently they are having major problems with their landlord.  It is New York.  I picked up on a few pieces of conversation & got the feeling that this place is in pretty extreme danger of getting kicked out of their current location.  They have had a lot of public support before, at the last minute, to try to save this gem in the village. But they need it again.  They need money.  They need you to go buy their food.  And we need them.  This place offers community.  To all.  This place was here when the whole "eat closer to earth" movement began.  The owner & the people in the bakery are the salt of the earth.  Places like this gave birth to the "trend"  of juicing, eating whole foods, eating vegan.  And they are still on top of it!  Their juice list is great and they are even offering "living" crackers, puddings, smoothies, juices, etc....Gluten Free too.

When you walk in the place, it is easy to see that this is the "bakery" that all the new, yuppier  health food versions modelled themselves after.  Except this bakery has been doing it for decades.  Whole grain flours, No refined sugars, loads of gluten free options and an incredible selection-including raw foods!  All without animal ingredients.  You can have your vegan pizza, cheesecakes, raw flax crackers, chia seed puddings, green juices (they even have collard!), smoothies, locally roasted coffee, wraps, and more-without any cholesterol.  And without the pretentious attitude or the overly hip ambiance, or prices.

The Cinnamon Raisin Buns looked absolutely amazing.  Appease the craving, with zero animal fat.  This cinnamon bun gives you energy.

Gluten Free Poppy Seed Lemon Muffins.  Locally Roasted Coffee.

Almond Biscotti, Cookies, Brown Rice Crispy Treats.

Ginger Snaps.  Major Omega Blasts with Hempseed, Flax, and Oat Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Adorable interior.

Savory Lunch dishes.  There were lots more in the main display as well.

Amazing Smoothie & Juice Selection.  Just that morning I paid 10 bucks for a small juice at Pure Food & Wine (because I was right there).  This place has juices way cheaper.........

They even have fresh coconut!!  Goji, Spiralina, all types of vegan proteins.

Yep.  Several types of Vegan Pizza Slices...

Mouth Watering Soup Selections.

One pound of soup for 4.50?  Of real food?  That's a coffee just down the street.

Skillet Corn Bread.

The cheesecakes all looked very tempting.  Gluten Free, Sugar Free, and of course, Vegan.

Apple Blueberry Scones.

And Raw Flax Crackers.

Kalamata Olive Bread Sticks.

Berry Pie, Trifles, and Brown Rice pudding with cashew milk.

Wraps.  Yum.  Portabella, Roasted Peppers, Onion, SunDried Tomato.

Lots of color!  Love the "Gluten Free" on the door.  Not everything is gluten free, but it is certainly a place with a lot of GF options.

You can get whole pies or order cakes, food for events.

Loved this place.  Reminded me of when I was a little girl & our family belonged to a co-op.  My folks were into eating recipes from  "Diet for a Small Planet" and they also had to be pretty frugal.  We would go about once a week and help out with orders, sorting food, and cleaning at the store.  This was the most spectacular time to me, because it was in the city, and we got to hang out with all types of people, all incomes, all colors, all religions, and all ages.  And all these people just wanted to eat healthier and establish a sense of community.  It bummed me out so much when my folks decided they didn't really have to time to do the co-op anymore.  They were working full time and it just kind of fell out our lives.  We lived in a really small midwestern town (the co-op was in the city, maybe 10 miles away), and we didn't get that weekly mix of people anymore.  We walked into Whole Earth, you could tell that people hung out here.  No matter how hip & uber cool it is to eat flax crackers, drink green juices, or eat vegan now, no "new" eatery can really recreate the atmosphere & community that places like Whole Earth Bakery have cultivated for nearly 35 years.  If you are in the area-please give them your business!  You can also donate money to them & maybe if we bug them enough, they might deliver outside of New York (mail order)?

Something about travel always makes we want to tow the line with the food.  Just to avoid upset tummies and I knew I was going to be heading to the Jivamukti Studio later.  So ended up with a nicely sized Kale Salad.  And below, the "Grain of the Day" with a sundried tomato tapenade.  Gluten Free Polenta.  Loved the salad and the polenta & tapenade combination was really comfort food.  It was healthy (not greasy or heavy) and earthy with subtle flavors.  Really nice for a chilly day.  The funny thing about ordering the "Grain of the Day" is that the waitress (who was a doll and reminded me of one of my favorite Persian friends) wrote on the tab "GOD".

Sacred Chow on Urbanspoon

It's a quaint spot.  It's not full of pretentious nuevo foods, but just simple yet wholesome plant based goodness.  A nice refuge from the hustle and bustle of the Village.  Our food came quickly, yet we didn't feel rushed at all.  I personally can't stand it when they keep coming to clear your plates when you aren't finished eating.  This is a place you can linger with dim lighting.
