Late Night Vegan New York. Dhaba, Vegan Indian past Midnight. Kathy Freston & Jane Velez-Mitchell on Headline News talkin' Cacao. East St. Louis Stray Dogs Need Fosters!

You always hear that NY is the "City that Never Sleeps".  But it's not.  Well, maybe it IS, but maybe it isn't the city that "DINES" all night.  So many places close up at 10, 11 or by midnight.  Kind of a bummer for those of us that love long, leisurely dinners when the clock strikes 12.  Even though many places brag of a later closing time in "The Vegan Guide to New York" book, often they fib.  If it's slow, they close early.  If it's winter, they close early.  If the waitstaff has a wild date night ahead, they close early.  Same thing with DhaBa.  Except that "hypothetically" they are open until 2 am.  Once we went pretty late & the place was PACKED with "youngsters" (people under 45).  And then the last time we went before 11, and were told that the kitchen was closing very soon & we should order ASAP.  So it's a crap shoot, but hit a good night, and this place is happening.

108 Lexington Avenue
New York City, NY.

What's pretty cool about this place is that they specify which dishes are Vegan.  We vegans like that.  I hate to be the "Meg Ryan" ordering.  So the more answers directly on the menu, the better.

Kadai Bhindi.  Sauteed Okra with Onions, Ginger, & Coriander.  A great okra dish.  I thought everything was a tad greasy, but hubby didn't even flinch.  But basically all restaurant food seems greasy to me (even raw joints, and sometimes especially raw joints).  So for late night Indian, it was nothing compared to "Shalimar" in San Fran, where we picked up a late night meal because the 3 pieces of tofu from acclaimed "Millenium" were not enough.  Shalimar was greasy.  Beyond greasy.  This was just "normal".

The decor is pretty hip and it's kind of an Indian "Sex in the City" joint.  Okay, everything "hip" is Sex in the City to me, because that's the last thing media wise, that I have followed, where I even came close to "hip clubs".  Lots of cloth on the wall, which I Love, BUT, with bedbugs being such a major NY topic, I kind of wondered if any were lurking in there!!

Loved that this was a "hang out" place.  A full bar and people uninhibited enough to use it.  Overall I though Dhaba was pretty good.  Basically, it has a decent vibe and isn't too "stiff".  Hubby thinks it is is delicious.  And that that deliciousness goes really well with a large Kingfisher Beer.  He quite appreciates a full bar WITH his spicy food.  I could do without the oil......but that is basically at every restaurant, so I can't be used as a barometer.  Also, would I trek here in the daytime?  Probably not.  Only because there are far too many entirely Vegan places to eat during regular hours.  We had just been to Caravan of Dreams way too many times for late night eats and thought we would switch it up a bit.  And Counter was forever closed the last time we went..........

What are your favorite Late Night Vegan Eats where YOU live??

Some kids that are on the streets of East St. Louis, Illinois.  Pj & Gateway Pet Guardians go each and every single day to care for all of the stray dogs & cats that they see.......and then rescue & foster as spots open at the shelter or foster homes become available.  These are areas of the United States that are incredible impoverished.  Even though I have accompanied Pj on these feedings many times, I am continually shocked & saddened by the "blight" of Washington Park, Illinois & East St. Louis, Illinois. They are "forgotten" places.  So many people & animals suffering.  There are some organizations helping with the people, but of course, that can be complicated.  The dogs can also be difficult.  As many are very shy & nearly feral.  Others are completely "normal" and were once "pets".  Pj works to gain trust of those that are not so trusting & GPG works on rescue plans.

Something about travel always makes we want to tow the line with the food.  Just to avoid upset tummies and I knew I was going to be heading to the Jivamukti Studio later.  So ended up with a nicely sized Kale Salad.  And below, the "Grain of the Day" with a sundried tomato tapenade.  Gluten Free Polenta.  Loved the salad and the polenta & tapenade combination was really comfort food.  It was healthy (not greasy or heavy) and earthy with subtle flavors.  Really nice for a chilly day.  The funny thing about ordering the "Grain of the Day" is that the waitress (who was a doll and reminded me of one of my favorite Persian friends) wrote on the tab "GOD".

Sacred Chow on Urbanspoon

It's a quaint spot.  It's not full of pretentious nuevo foods, but just simple yet wholesome plant based goodness.  A nice refuge from the hustle and bustle of the Village.  Our food came quickly, yet we didn't feel rushed at all.  I personally can't stand it when they keep coming to clear your plates when you aren't finished eating.  This is a place you can linger with dim lighting.

Vegan in New York. There's An App for that.

Yes, I have a sick habit of accumulating books.  And after I gave all my favorite ones away, I just started again.  But I never gave away my past 5 years worth of "Vegan Guide to New York City" by Rynn Berry & Chris Suzuki. .  Nope.  Those books are far too precious and to be doled out to close friends.  Seriously, West Coasters, you guys have NOTHING on the Lower East Side!!  What is so amazing about "The Big Apple" is that places are so close in proximity!  We haven't even ventured into Brooklyn yet!  Plant yourself in Union Square & you have the GreenMarket with the freshest Wheat Grass ever, Body & Soul bakery, Jivamuktea Cafe, Pure Food & Wine, Viva Pizzeria, Liqueteria, Quintessence, Lula's Sweet Apothecary, Angelica's Kitchen, Caravan of Dreams, Sacred Chow, NY Dosas,  Stogo Ice Cream,  Tien Garden, Babycakes, Teany, yikes, the list is endless, truly.

The Vegan Guide to New York City 2011
Vegan Guide to New York City
Tien Garden.  Vegan Chinese sin garlic or onions.  Next to anarchist/progressive/hip "Bluestockings" bookstore.

This year I not only bought the book, but the Vegan Guide to New York City App. as well.  It isn't imperative to buy a new guide yearly, but I just don't want to miss out on the latest!!  You do need to call places regarding hours though.  Often places will consistently close earlier than the "stated" hours, especially late night venues.  And the summer hours tend to be longer.  If you are vegan, New York is the Planet's Mecca!!   The app. is cool because it gets updated when new stuff happens & it has the map with all the places on it!  The authors dish their faves also, by giving it a "pick" or just mentioning it's existence and the pros & cons.  They give you the "heads up" on which Indian Joints clearly mark *vegan* and which are *questionable*.  Even if you just go for a weekend, you gotta have this book/and or app!!  Hubby & I can usually hit 6 places a day, at the very least!!! Granted, we gotta do Babycakes as "take-out".  And after you have stuffed yourself so completely, you hit Moo-Shoes & look at vegan wallets, shoes, books, tee shirts, and cats.  Especially cute is the cat that gets shaved like a lion.

Dosas from the Ny Dosa Cart.

And there's this great little video that the "Our Hen House" gals put together for VegNews, New York on the Cheap.  They covered many non-vegan places also, and didn't hit all our faves, but they did put together an awesome collage.  Hopefully there's more to follow!

Babycakes.  Vegan.  Lots of Gluten Free, Coconut Oil, Non Sugar sweetened goodies.

I say for "Cheap" that the Dosa Cart in Washington Park is our fave.  But we don't usually go for "Cheap" in New York, since we don't live there.  My New York Faves are Pure Food & Wine (but we don't usually eat there now because it is too dripping with hipness for us!!, Quintessence for some dessert, Lula's Sweet Apothecary for some the most amazing ice cream (my fave is coconut based), Hubby's fave pizza from Viva Pizzeria, Babycakes for gluten free non refined sugar donuts, cookies & more, Jivamuktea Cafe for some Yoga & beautiful Vegan cafe with lovely light, Liqueteria for amazing juices, NY Dosa Cart for amazing Vegan Dosas, Hangawi for a beautiful Korean Vegan Zenned out "experience" (barefoot dining), Tien Garden for Chinese Food without the Garlic or Onions (bad for the meditation), Teany (late night) the teeny tiny tea joint with Vegan Sweets & lots of comfort food sandwiches & extended tea list-oh & booze.

Viva Herbal Pizzeria.

What are your fave vegan joints or places that have vegan stuff on the menu?? In New York?  Elsewhere?  What about Late Night Vegan New York??
