Raw Vegan (Emergency) Brownies in under 10 seconds. PuraVegan Raw Vegan Pizza. Horton gets out of Jail. Laughing Giraffe Raw Vegan Granola.

PuraVegan. In St. Louis, Missouri-United States.  Barbecue Pizza.  Had zero idea what to expect.  Um, amazing.  I went home & made raw bbq sauce for a week afterwards!  Lots of food and the crust was dense.  Very filling, and that's no BS. I hate "light" dishes as I am a powerhouse eater & can't stand it when there are a few pretty sprouts with some "raw" dressing and some nuts and it's called a burger or something.  But PuraVegan totally delivers & I have been to a fair number of Raw Places.  Try it!

This was the Italian Pizza I think...Deliciousness with the olives.  Once again, a great crust that had lots of flavor and was perfectly "done".  Raw crusts can be tricky.  They have to be thick enough to hold food, yet thin enough that they can fully dehydrate.  Also, when "wet" food hits the crust, the crust (if not protected), can get a bit damp.  So you can protect the crust by putting down an initial layer of collards, a dry nut base, or something to create a kind of barrier between the sauces and the crust.  It is not essential, but it does help the integrity of the crust last a bit longer.  Loved these pizzas!

And Raw Vegan Laughing Giraffe Granola.  I have never tried this, since it is usually not on sale & it has agave in it.  Usually I aim for the snacky snacks that are date sweetened.  But, I splurged.

The stuff is delicious.  Cranberry Orange.  Yum.  But delicious comes with a price.

190 out of 260 calories from fat.  That said, it is all from nuts.  Walnuts, Pecans, Almonds, Pumpkin Seeds, and Raw Cacao.  I have been trying not to overdo the nuts (my belly revolts) but of course I ate the whole bag within the day.  Yeah, I know.  I tried to pawn some off on my hubby but he likes to "save" the raw treats for me.  The combo of cacao, cinnamon & oranges rocked though.  And I might try to make a low fat version of these same flavors.  Without the agave.

So the whole bag has something like 28% RDA of Iron.  14% RDA of calcium.  7% Vitamin C.

Improvisational Salad......Cabbage, Apples, Avocado, Cayenne.  Have been using Apple Cider Vinegar, salt free seasonings, and some dates as toppings.

Ever heard the jokes about how raw vegan cookies are some nuts and dates smushed (yeah, it's a made up word) together?  Well, they are wrong.  Because usually it is in the food processor! :) But if I want some chocolate, and I mean, fast.  I don't want sugar. I don't want preservatives.  I pull out those Cacao Beans & grab a few dates from my 15 pound box from The Date People.

Ingredients: Cacao Beans.  Dates.
Usually I don't get this brand of Cacao.  It's fine, but this type is pricey & from Whole Foods.  I shop online for the best deal, typically.

Step 1. Gently Massage/twist the peel of the Cacao Bean.  You can eat it.  But it is a little bitter.  My hubby loves the things, straight up.  But for the 10 second brownie, I peel it.  The cacao bean may break into nibs.  Try to keep them kind of together.

Step 2.  Take the pit out of the date.

Step 3.  Put the Cacao Bean into the date.  And Smush!

Pj & Horton.  Before he was rescued.  Horton is a doll.  He has hung out with multiple packs of dogs & all of his friends had been rescued.  We had plans to rescue him, but he actually went in an Animal Control Trap just prior to that!  Luckily a beautiful girl who works at the adoption center part of that, recognized him from some photos sent out weeks before.  We were notified, and Pj & GPG made a beeline for Animal Control.  If I did what Pj did every single day, I would have either have a yearly subscription to yoga, an organic vegan wine club & mandatory meditation classes-or be on high doses of Prosac.  Going into Animal Control was hard............We left with Horton but heard the cries of so many other dogs.  It was hell.  I was trying not to actually just sob uncotrollably and have a meltdown.   That's when I play "The Suffering Game".  I just have to focus on all of the suffering on the entire planet.  The ocean that is polluted.  The millions of animals on factory farms, that no one cares about.  The chickens with their beaks cut off, laying eggs.  The people in other countries risking their lives just to make water runs.  The widows of India, exiled from their families, spending their days begging.  The plants that are crying because their planet has been so polluted.  And what is happening inside of this Animal Control, is just a small piece of that suffering, that is happening as I type this.  So we are saving this one life, reducing the suffering by just a little bit.  And we cannot alleviate all of the suffering, all of the time.  We can only do our best.  So I just take those bad moments & try to put them in another spot in my head & try not to visit it too terribly much.

Here is Horton walking out of Animal Control (in Illinois) with Pj & Gateway Pet Guardians.

Walking out of Animal Control. Sigh. Cry. Sigh.

Late Night Vegan New York. Dhaba, Vegan Indian past Midnight. Kathy Freston & Jane Velez-Mitchell on Headline News talkin' Cacao. East St. Louis Stray Dogs Need Fosters!

You always hear that NY is the "City that Never Sleeps".  But it's not.  Well, maybe it IS, but maybe it isn't the city that "DINES" all night.  So many places close up at 10, 11 or by midnight.  Kind of a bummer for those of us that love long, leisurely dinners when the clock strikes 12.  Even though many places brag of a later closing time in "The Vegan Guide to New York" book, often they fib.  If it's slow, they close early.  If it's winter, they close early.  If the waitstaff has a wild date night ahead, they close early.  Same thing with DhaBa.  Except that "hypothetically" they are open until 2 am.  Once we went pretty late & the place was PACKED with "youngsters" (people under 45).  And then the last time we went before 11, and were told that the kitchen was closing very soon & we should order ASAP.  So it's a crap shoot, but hit a good night, and this place is happening.

108 Lexington Avenue
New York City, NY.

What's pretty cool about this place is that they specify which dishes are Vegan.  We vegans like that.  I hate to be the "Meg Ryan" ordering.  So the more answers directly on the menu, the better.

Kadai Bhindi.  Sauteed Okra with Onions, Ginger, & Coriander.  A great okra dish.  I thought everything was a tad greasy, but hubby didn't even flinch.  But basically all restaurant food seems greasy to me (even raw joints, and sometimes especially raw joints).  So for late night Indian, it was nothing compared to "Shalimar" in San Fran, where we picked up a late night meal because the 3 pieces of tofu from acclaimed "Millenium" were not enough.  Shalimar was greasy.  Beyond greasy.  This was just "normal".

The decor is pretty hip and it's kind of an Indian "Sex in the City" joint.  Okay, everything "hip" is Sex in the City to me, because that's the last thing media wise, that I have followed, where I even came close to "hip clubs".  Lots of cloth on the wall, which I Love, BUT, with bedbugs being such a major NY topic, I kind of wondered if any were lurking in there!!

Loved that this was a "hang out" place.  A full bar and people uninhibited enough to use it.  Overall I though Dhaba was pretty good.  Basically, it has a decent vibe and isn't too "stiff".  Hubby thinks it is is delicious.  And that that deliciousness goes really well with a large Kingfisher Beer.  He quite appreciates a full bar WITH his spicy food.  I could do without the oil......but that is basically at every restaurant, so I can't be used as a barometer.  Also, would I trek here in the daytime?  Probably not.  Only because there are far too many entirely Vegan places to eat during regular hours.  We had just been to Caravan of Dreams way too many times for late night eats and thought we would switch it up a bit.  And Counter was forever closed the last time we went..........

What are your favorite Late Night Vegan Eats where YOU live??

Some kids that are on the streets of East St. Louis, Illinois.  Pj & Gateway Pet Guardians go each and every single day to care for all of the stray dogs & cats that they see.......and then rescue & foster as spots open at the shelter or foster homes become available.  These are areas of the United States that are incredible impoverished.  Even though I have accompanied Pj on these feedings many times, I am continually shocked & saddened by the "blight" of Washington Park, Illinois & East St. Louis, Illinois. They are "forgotten" places.  So many people & animals suffering.  There are some organizations helping with the people, but of course, that can be complicated.  The dogs can also be difficult.  As many are very shy & nearly feral.  Others are completely "normal" and were once "pets".  Pj works to gain trust of those that are not so trusting & GPG works on rescue plans.

Moo Shoes, New York. Vegan Shoes, Boots, Belts, Bags, and Bling in the Lower East Side.

A trip to New York is not complete until I have hit Moo Shoes.  Hemp Hats, Matt & Nat Bags, Combat Boots, Vegan Cookbooks, Herbivore Clothes.....All Cruelty Free.  And they have resident cats.

78 Orchard St
New York, NY  10002

In a favorite part of New York.  The Lower East Side.  Within a block is TienGarden, BlueStockings, Babycakes, and Gus's Pickles used to be across the street (Think movie "Crossing Delancy") but is now gone.  So basically Vegan Heaven in a city block.

MooShoes was opened in 2001 by sisters Erica & Sara Kubersky.

Resident Cat.

I think this is the one that sometimes gets shaved like a lion!

Love all the bags, Wallets (both men's and women's), and tennis shoes.

My hubby had to pry me away from this wall last time.  Usually I try to make one stop "husband free"  just so I am not "reminded" that I already "have a bag that looks like that".  Hubby has gotten some goods from here as well.  Some Earth Sandals and a few wallets.

He can't remember the password to the store account.  He wanted to order more cat treats.

Some great heels but whenever I am in New York heels are the last thing on my mind.  Not for a walking city!

Pleather Jackets from Vegetarian Shoes and lots of veggie shirts and belts.

They also usually have the latest "Vegan Guide to New York" and other vegan information both local & national.

Made out of recycled bottles.

This store is so casual and welcoming, that even your other half will endure your pursuit of pretty feet.  Even if you already do have bags or shoes that "look like that".

East St. Louis, Illinois Rescues

Some of the kids on our East St. Louis Feeding/Rescue Route.  Savvy on left is super pregnant and has been rescued!!  She is due anyday now.  Then Knuckles has a hurt "elbow".  Horton is the beautiful Brindle dog and the father to Savvy's kids.  And shy Fingers is on the end.
This Siamese kitty has also been rescued and is up for adoption at www.gatewaypets.com !! East St. Louis.

RaRa is stilllllll waiting for a foster home.  She has lived her entire life on the streets of East St. Louis and just wants to retire in a warm home.

This is kind of sad.  Washington Park, Illinois, is a new part of the route and seems even more blighted than East St. Louis.  Except the homes are newer and abandoned.  This poor dog has an embedded chain but would not let Pj close enough to do anything about it.  She has been keeping an eye on it and trying to earn trust so she & GPG can rectify the situation and get this poor guy the medical attention he needs.

So many chained dogs in this area.  It is not illegal.  However, if the animal does not have shelter or the chain is "too short" (but there is no length requirement), then they may get a knock on the door.  Pj has not seen this dog again.  Very strange.

Mr. Tux is still out there.  The Siamese and Tommy used to be at this house as well but they were rescued.  Maybe Mr. Tux will be next.

Poor Savvy!!!!  This is when she was ready to burst with babies.  We were so lucky that Ms. U agreed to foster her and actually went that evening and by some miracle Savvy was still at the house and let Ms. U take her in the car.  Now Savvy is resting comfortably, just waiting.  Like every other pregnant mom to be!

So happy that we were able to save her!!  I would not have wanted to go into this home to try to get the puppies.  It is half collapsed so not really sturdy enough to stand and still enough to fall on ya.....not good.  February 23, 2012

Here is Pj talking to Savvy.

The gal on the left is an adorable German Shepard puppy that Pj rescued February 25, 2012.  Super sweet and full of energy.  She is up for adoption.

And Blondie, my current running buddy.  Another East St. Louis Rescue.  She is still waiting for a forever home.

And 30 seconds with RaRa who is still waiting for a foster....
