Dr. G's Groovy Gooseberry Amazing Antioxidant SuperPower Smoothie. Cancer, Diabetes, High Cholesterol-Meet my New Friend "Amla". And then "Go Fruit Yourself".

From nutritionfacts.org
A commercial free, science based nutrition site.

There are only 3 whole foods on the planet that have more antioxidant power than cloves (according to this study).  One of them is Amla.  Not just more powerful, but more palatable.  You can add a teaspoon of powdered amla to your smoothies and if you even taste it, it will probably be subtle.  Try doing that with cloves!!

Typical American Breakfast Food Antioxidant Contents.

Bacon and Eggs  7
Bowl of Cornflakes with milk  30
Egg McMuffin 16
Bagel with Cream Cheese 26

Dr. Greger's Groovy Gooseberry Smoothie??

1.Cup of unsweetened soymilk 16
2.1/2 cup of frozen blueberries 535
3.Pulp of Mexican Mango 124 (the mango ALONE has more antioxidants than the other breakfasts!)
4.Tablespoon of ground flaxseeds 9
5.A palm full of bulk white tea leaves 101
6.1 teaspoon of Amla, Indian Gooseberry Powder 782 (about 4 CENTS worth of Amla!!!!)

1500 Units of Antioxidant Power in this Dr. G's Smoothie!

More than the average person gets in an entire week!!
1/2 of the Antioxidant power from the smoothie came from that single teaspoon of powdered Gooseberries!

I improvise my smoothies....meaning, I use whatever I have left or available in the house.  But my current faves include:

Typical Frozen Bananas, Mangoes, Nearly one pound of fresh Spinach, 1 tsp. Amla, 2 tsp. Cinnamon, PlantFusion Protein Powder (Love the flavor!). And a glass straw which has exponentially increased the joy I derive from green smoothies!!

Some of my Smoothie Picks:

1. PlantFusion Protein Powder (gluten free) because of it's great taste and it packs in 42% RDA protein in 1 scoop.  I never used powders prior to this, but have kind of grown to love this one, especially when I am eating a very high fruit diet.
2. Frozen Bananas that I slice and keep in freezer in ziplocs.
3. Diced Frozen Mangoes (I buy them cheap) or strawberries, blueberries, etc...
4. Half to 3/4 pound of fresh Spinach, Mixed Lettuces, Kale, or other greens.
5.  If fresh is out then I hit the frozen spinach or frozen broccoli
6. Sprouts.  Sprouts can be great in smoothies.
7.  One teaspoon Amla.
8.  Other extras I may include are cinnamon, maca, lucuma, turmeric, chia seeds, black sesame seeds, kelp powder or other seaweed, hemp seeds.......Staples are cinnamon & turmeric.  Those are cheap.  Anything else is icing on the cake.  I buy nearly all my herbs and spices from Mountain Rose Herbs-I can't find anything cheaper or more ethical.  Love them.

Banana & Spinach.

 Blueberries, Kale, Pomegranate.

 Mango, Spinach, Banana

Broccoli is another great addition to smoothies. Frozen works great too and tends to be cheaper and lasts longer.

Mesclun Sprouts. Superfood for Smoothies.
I just adore Dr Greger's video and am always learning something new!!  And that's very cool because I get really bored with the "latest and greatest"  nutrition stuff that has actually been out there for decades.    And he puts out all these wonderfully entertaining videos on DVD sets as well (you can see many of them on his site too).  And ALL the proceeds go to charity.  I first saw the guy when he was travelling around the country giving speeches about Mad Cow Disease, Nutrition, The Atkins Diet, etc....and he would speak anywhere.  He is up there with John Robbins and the people who are not chasing wealth at all.  There are so few people that we meet that uphold such a high level of integrity, and then give back the fruits of their work to the community.  He is one of those and I encourage you to support his work and buy his books & DVD's.  I put one in the DVD player and thought my hubby was occupied with an intense Angry Birds game on the ipad.  Minutes into the "quiz" show Dvd, the ipad was turned off and on the coffee table.  He couldn't help but pay attention!  When Disc one was over, I didn't want to "subject" him to more of my nutrition stuff that night, so I said I would watch the next one when he wasn't home.  But no, he wanted to watch it right THEN!!!!  Quirky & entertaining.  He has EIGHT DVDS OUT!!!! This is his latest and you can see all the topics below!

Aloo Baingan. Spicy Punjabi Eggplant with Potatoes from "The Indian Slow Cooker Book". Antioxidant Veggies. Fosters needed!

Vegan Aloo Baingan. From my favorite slow cooker book & my favorite Indian book, on the planet. Eggplant & Potatoes.  Zero grease.  Zero cholesterol.  100% goodness.  Cut veggies.  Add spices.  Push "go".  Leave room!

The Indian Slow Cooker: 50 Healthy, Easy, Authentic Recipes
Buy The Indian Slow Cooker Book
A "must have" for any Vegan that loves Indian food.

Her next book will be all vegan.  But not all slow cooking.  Even though the slow cooker book has a couple of meat recipes in it, I would still buy it.  It is by far the most often used book in my kitchen.  Whether I am eating cooked or raw-it makes it a cinch to whip something up with ingredients I keep on my shelves and "normal produce".

Somehow I managed to keep an eggplant going all summer......

I cut the eggplant slightly larger than the potatoes because I am always worried the potatoes will not cook fully.

The smaller you cook the potatoes, the faster they get cooked..........

Easy if you have all your spices in a "Spice Tiffin"!

Garlic, Ginger, Garam Masala, Turmeric, Onion, Cumin...

Sometimes the lid will barely go on the slow cooker.  However, it cooks down pretty quickly.  I "set" the lid on top, and within a short time it cooked down.  Also-I just used a small amount of water to avoid using any oil at all.  It works great.

And a few hours later..........

Cilantro and Onion to garnish.

Divine, as usual.  I always halve the salt in the slow cooker book recipes.  Anupy calls for course salt as well, so if you are using a finer grade, you are going to want to reduce the amount.  Also, cooking times can vary slightly.  They are veggies & beans and it is a slow cooker.  I have found that nearly every recipe in the book worked at the amount of time given.  But I do tend to cook a few of the dry recipes for just a bit longer.

They always talk about anti-oxidant activity, but they don't always talk about which veggies actually work best "within" your cells.  Dr. G keeps up on everything and has the most informative nutritional nuggets you can get.  Infused with a dose of humor.  Check him out on the link above.

Check it out!!  Eggplant didn't win, but it's pretty high up on the list............

These are about 30 to 90 second clips of some of the dogs www.gatewaypets.com  feeds daily on the streets of East St. Louis.  They all need fosters.

Ahhh.  RaRa is still looking for a foster.  She would do best with a submissive male.  She has lived her whole life on the streets and is just a doll.

Horton & Horton's girl.  Horton (the black/brindle dog) used to hang with another pack but most of them got rescued.  He seems to have made a lot of new friends on the streets.  Sometimes he hangs with Knuckles & Fingers.  And sometimes "his girl".  There are many boarded up, burned out, and abandoned homes in East St. Louis.  A few of the homes that we have done puppy rescues in, have since completely collapsed.  Mama dogs often have puppies underneath the floorboards of these homes.  However, even though the dogs may seek shelter in these places, it isn't like they just stay in them all the time.  Most of these kids are also very shy.

These kids are ridiculously cute.  And they are almost always there.

OMG.  All the kids came out this day.  Listen carefully at the end and you hear little Siamese making a funny sound.

Horton and Knuckles.  Poor Knuckles needs to have his "elbow" looked at to see if there is anything we can to to help him.

Dr G's Nuts & Clever Cloves . Vegan Thanksgiving! Anti-Aging Peaceful PIes. Vegan Pumpkin Pie and Raw Vegan Butternut Squash or "Pumpkin Pie" Pie from Alissa Cohen's "Living On Live Food"

Soaked Dates and Raw Almonds.  Raw Fooders know that it is a "trick" to get "really raw" almonds because of new laws that require them to get pasteurized (or at least heated to above the commonly accepted "raw norms").  I ordered these from Bremner Farms-directly from the grower.  They did say they were raw and that their facility is gluten free and that they are safe for celiacs.  So give them a call to confirm or check them out if you are a celiac looking for another nut supplier because apparently there aren't scads of Gluten Free (Certified) Nut suppliers!  Currently selling from 6-8 dollars a pound depending on what amount you buy (Raw & Organic).  So for me this was basically cheaper than the almonds that are at Whole Foods, in the bags, which are not raw, and are not organic, and are not grown in the United States.........

  Living on Live Food
This is the "Pumpkin Pie" from Alissa's book (page 498 in my copy).  Raw. Vegan.  Simple. And it uses butternut squash!  Plus it has the standard cinnamon, ginger, cloves and nutmeg for an ORAC party.

What are the Miracle Foods??  Nuts & Cloves!! So indulge in some anti-aging pies this Holiday!

Dr G's Healthy Pumpkin Pie (Cooked) from NutritionFacts.Org
Cloves & Cinnamon are AMAZING!!!!

These Dates are the cheaper variety at Whole Foods.  Organic but Deglet Noor, not Medjool.  However, if you love dates, then you must contact "The Date People" from California who grow natural dates but are not "certified" organic.  From what I understand, they do not use pesticides but they are a very small business and could not/would not go through the certification process.  When I say "small", I mean there is not always someone answering the phone there because they are picking dates!  They have Variety Packs as well, and "wet" and "dry" dates.

Grating the Squash was a cinch.  I just put it through my handy dandy retro "Salad Shooter".

Super Spices!  Yep, all the stuff Dr. Oz mentions everyday......NO, there will be no mercury filled Salmon in my pie!

Cuisinart......or any old food processor.  Yes, push "Go"!

With these raw dishes, I always feel like texture is subjective.  I prefer chunky, but you might want a super smooth pie so it could "pass" for a "cooked" version?  If I ever want something super duper smooth, I throw it in the Vita-mix.  But for my everyday stuff, it's easier to just use the food processor.  Plus you don't need extra liquid in the food processor.

So the Nuts & Dates make the "crust". No baking, no dehydrating.

Once again, I wasn't sure how it would "set" or slice.  But after the pie spent sometime meditating in the fridge, it formed a beautiful texture that was pretty "sliceable".  It wasn't a Cafe Gratitude pie, but it also didn't have 1/2 a pound of Coconut Oil in it-expensive for the wallet (Artisana) and controversial for the heart!!  But the is a type of pie you can make easily at home, probably with ingredients you keep on hand if you are flirting with raw foods.

Why a Plant Based Thanksgiving??  Well, if you have a dog or a cat then you probably know a little about animal love.  And everyone knows you can't actually "love" animals if you still eat them!!  This video is the reality.........The beautiful thing is that we each make a choice every single time we eat.  If we are buying these products, then we are personally responsible for creating more suffering in the world.  If our goal is to reduce suffering in the world, then eating plants, and less food in general, is a marvelous way to go.  For our bodies, the planet, and of course the animals we love.

Just when Fast Food couldn't suck more.....Well Mercy For Animals is going Primetime.  Yep, this story is on Diane Sawyer & 20/20.  The reality is that these are the truths, the "industry standards" of egg production.  These birds are considered "livestock", not animals.  They are products and treated by the industry no differently than Chinese Made Toys thrown on shelves at a Walmart.  Once again, we have a choice.  We create the change.  This suffering only exists because people pay for it.  With their pocketbooks, with their health, and with a lot of karma.....

Just another East St. Louis Feeding....I go out with Pj & the Gateway Pet Guardians crew once in awhile.  I am able to get up early, which basically qualifies me to go-Pj likes punctuality!  So even if my boots aren't tied, I usually have myself ready to go on time and get to feel like we are doing something compassionate in the early hours.  I would love to hear about rescue work that any of the readers do!!  These feedings/rescues are all in East St. Louis, Illinois (across the river from St. Louis, Missouri).
